Biology
Smilers are quadrupedal Life-Forms with a dragon-like appearance; their most distinguishable features are, a sharp smile that glows in the dark, and it's predatory nature. They also have long necks, ears that resemble horns, and a long tail.

Smilers have very dark skin, that blends in with the dark; these features help them stalk their prey without them realizing, though Smilers don't see us as prey; they see us as competition.
The reason being, that we, humans, are sapient, just like Smilers, these Life-Forms have a higher IQ than any normal predator from our Baseline Reality, making them formidable savages that wander freely through most of The Backrooms. Despite being sapient, they cannot produce any sound from their vocal chords other than growling and grunting.
Smilers are incredibly photosensitive; any kind of light could harm their skin and retinas, temporarily stunning them. Though they can travel in spaces that are incredibly foggy or cloudy, blocking out most of the sunlight, making it even more difficult to run away.
Smilers have legs developed for running about 20km per hour, and sharp claws, making the prey incapable of escaping the Smiler's grasp. Meeting a Smiler in a long hallway would be a death sentence.
A Smiler's eardrums used to be formidable, being capable of hearing things 360 meters away, which is exactly double of what a normal human is capable of hearing. But after an entire century, they can only hear 60% of what they originally could hear, exactly 216 meters away, still being superior to a human's.
A Smiler's nose is very similar to the one of a canine, capable of tracking your scent, though you could always create some kind of distraction to lure it off your trail.
Behaviour
A Smiler's behavior is mostly unpredictable. As they wander aimlessly in whichever area they reside in.
Smilers have also been documented to be extremely territorial, rarely being in packs of 2-4 Smilers, usually a Smiler hunts by asphyxiation, and once the victim is about to lose consciousness, their neck is snapped, and then they are eaten.
As every Smiler is photosensitive, they will stalk their prey from the distance, until they come out of the light, or their flashlight runs out of battery, though these attacks are mostly unpredictable, and many have fallen victim to a Smiler during this period while being stalked, best you can do is remain near any kind of light source that could prove effective against the Smiler.
Another curious fact is that, if you maintain eye contact, and back away slowly, it has a 50/50 chance of that Smiler letting you go unharmed, we theorize that this is a way of showing the Smiler that you have no fear, as Smilers often take joy in harming and causing dread to others. Showing that you have no fear could also be a sign of respect by the Smiler that you may have encountered.
One of the most common things Smilers do when they come in contact with their prey, is to stare them down, in doing so, it should strike fear in their prey, and will make them panic, which would just be a death sentence, since Smilers will go after you.
A Smiler's behavior greatly varies when in packs, they often hibernate or search for more prey, human or not.
Most Smilers hide in corners, in dark hallways, or office rooms, to blend their body in with the darkness; there could also be more examples, but there are just too many possibilities to work with.
Species
Smilers have 2 different species in common, both of them are very similar in appearance, but vary greatly in Biology and Behaviors.
Primordial
Primordial Smilers are considered ancestors to the Smiler, they share the same appearance, though they are much bigger, and instead of having a white glow from their face, it is a scarlet-red tint.

| A rare sight of a Primordial Smiler located in an unidentified Level of The Backrooms. |
They are a supposedly superior, evolved version of the Smiler, it seems that from today, they have been reduced to smaller numbers, though it is most likely that they are repopulating their species.
Primordial Smilers have more bulkier skin compared to the Smiler, and also has improved eyesight, and immunity to weak lights, like those of a flashlight. Due to their sheer size, they have a slight disadvantage on speed, though they are much more fierce and strong.
It also seems to have sharper fangs compared to those of its descendants. Able to cut through weak types of metal.
Primordial Smilers seem to not have the endowment of being able to track scents; however, they have multiple lungs, allowing them to breathe in more oxygen, saving a lot of energy.
Primordial Smilers, similar to normal Smilers, like to hide in dark corners, and also stalking prey, but instead, as soon as their prey turns their back on them, they will leap behind them and strangle them to death, similar to what a normal Smiler does.
This species are more curious than normal Smilers, and are often found in caves, abandoned buildings, rarely outdoors, still following the same rules, traveling in spaces that are incredibly foggy or cloudy. And unlike normal Smilers, Primordial Smilers are extremely territorial and will not come in packs, whenever two males meet up it will escalate into a fight, and the winner ends up eating the loser.
As said above, Primordial Smilers are very aggressive towards eachother, if you ever meet up with one, it is best to run away as fast as you can.
Majoris
Smiler Majoris, also named as Great Smilers, are native to Level 37, and are also rarely present in Level 10. Smiler Majoris are 252ft in size, 6x the size of a Smiler's size, and due to this they are very slow.

| A photograph of Great Smilers seen from the distance of an intersection between Level 10 and Level 37. |
Because of their sheer size, they look pretty intimidating from the distance, which scares other kinds of life away. And because of this, food is very scarce. A sign of adaption to this situation, is that this species are omnivores and would eat plants instead of meat, although they still hunt for meat in Level 37, and when they run out of meat, they go to Level 10 to eat Wheat instead.
Smiler Majoris are always hunting in packs, similarly to normal Smilers, though sometimes they can be seen together even if they are not hunting such as; wandering aimlessly in Level 10, stalking in dark corners of Level 37. Their behavior overall is very similar to that of a normal Smiler.
Whenever a member of a pack spots a living being, it lets out a call-out cry to other Great Smilers, the best thing to do in this situation is to quickly hide inside a building if you are in Level 37, if you are in Level 10 however, best thing you can do is run away and blend in with the fog, until you feel like they have given up on you.
Despite being incredibly similar to a regular Smiler, the most drastical change was their face, their glow has been dimmed, and can only be seen in the dark, however when outside of the dark it doesn't seem to be glowing at all. They still are capable of tracking scents, but they don't have much luck in Level 10, as most of the terrain has been drenched in Almond Water.
Smiler Majoris are the dominant Life-Form of Level 37, as other life has most likely been killed and eaten by the Smilers, although some life is still out there, and even if these Smilers and always present in Level 37, they are not commonly seen in the outside due to the sheer size of the City itself.
These Smilers have lower IQ compared to the other species, and could be outrun easily by smaller prey, although they have the strength to destroy a large part of the City to go after their prey, though its almost as if the damage repairs by itself magically, as returning to the scene of a Smiler Majoris attack, everything would look the exact same as before.
Discovery
Smilers were discovered in 1959, 5 years after the foundation of this corporation, as the year suggests, we have been stuck in Level 0 in terms of research, being the most documented Level of The Database, though all of this changed in 1959, where we first discovered Level 1, and Smilers, this Life-Form was given this name by its most distinguishable feature.
Primordial Smilers were discovered 1 year later; back then they were in a larger number, being the main reason why we managed to capture one to research them. At first it was very difficult to capture one considering the nature of their species.
Smiler Majoris have been documented just a few months after the discovery of the Smiler, ever since we got to Level 1, we have been discovering numerous Levels, and Level 37 was discovered after following Level 10's bigger Pylons.
All of this happened very quickly, and meanwhile we have been documenting other Life-Forms as well, and during this period we haven't been able to document Smilers as well as today. This is merely a gathering of all information in the past years; we haven't discovered anything new about the Smilers yet.
