Level 99 is the 99th Level of The Backrooms.

Description

Level 99 resembles an expansive house which appears to be made in the early 2000s, it features white plaster walls, a ceiling of the same material and colour, and a Berber, grey carpet that lacks depth, appearing almost like a painting on top of the ground, yet still retaining the carpet like feel. The lighting within the Level is odd, to say the least. It does not create shadows; there is only fluctuating light and dark, creating a lighting akin to that of a late 90's video game.

The Level doesn't have a uniform layout, instead being a sprawling maze of empty halls and rooms, which makes it extremely easy to get lost within. The halls lack ceiling lights, plunging it into pure darkness, and tend to be lined with locked doors, only being unlocked on occasion, which leads into small storage closets that hold things one would expect from a house, such as boxes and clothes.

The Level is extremely non-linear, where the halls and rooms will seemingly change location and be replaced with something else if one is to turn their back on it. Furthermore, it is common for one to end up in a completely different location if they were to do as little as blinking, which can be a blessing if one is to come face to face with a group of entities, but a curse if you were nearby an exit point.

Within Level 99, the rooms that lie throughout the sprawling hallways are considered safe zones, as Life-Forms cannot access them. Within these rooms, there is generally no furniture, at the most containing a lone couch or sofa. What it does regularly contain are random objects, such as cardboard boxes, computers that generally are decommissioned, fans, and a plethora of other trinkets and items. Throughout most rooms, lies a singular window that lacks things such as curtains or blinds, and will depict the exact same location and position as all the other windows in the Level. What lies on the outside is consistent throughout, and poses an extreme threat to those travelling around.

The outside appears to be an expansive wasteland-esque countryside littered with pylons and utility poles, its ground is a brown, burnt grass that appears to have been set aflame long ago, and the sky is filled with dark, thick clouds that come together to form a gigantic F5 category tornado in the distance while casting an ember-like light throughout itself. The longer one stays within the Level, the closer and closer the tornado will get, where it'll eventually rip the Level and everything within it apart, timing those who enter to escape in roughly an hour. The outside can be accessed via the windows found within Level 99, although doing that is wishing to die due to its variety of factors, with the outside reaching temperatures like 60°C, and the air being filled with dangerous spores, infecting those who intake enough of it with a fairly undocumented disease, one that doesn't seem to have a cure that will slowly kill those it has infected, and the pure power of the tornado that will create gales which will sweep lighter travellers off their feet, occasionally lifting them upwards in the air.

Due to something odd happening with the outside, the main portion of Level 99 does not appear to retain its real layout, instead appearing as a small, now decayed and run-down suburban house with a broken porch of rotten, burnt wood, caved-in roof with a chimney that is barely standing, shattered windows, broken door, yet the house does not have an inside to it, as it is covered in darkness, and any attempt to enter it will simply lead you back out into the main section of the Level again. There is a plethora of entities that roam the darkened halls of the Level, which occasionally hide closets within them, making it more difficult to avoid attracting unwanted attention.

History

Level 99 was discovered in the early 90s, by the pure "luck" of a traveller via Level 11, with the Level not having a documented exit for years until recently.

Events

After the 1 hour timer has passed, the tornado will hit the Level's main section, rampaging through it and briefly connecting the outside and the inside, where the ember sky can be seen from the torn-off roof, with an unnatural property about the destruction being how it works in a very unrealistic sense, where instead of being pulled in, the walls, floor and ceiling will just disappear on contact, yet everything that isn't the structure, like objects, will be dragged in as one would expect. It appears that travellers are treated as if they were a part of the structure, so you will not be sucked into the tornado, giving you a chance to run away, though you most likely won't get far.
After the entire structure has been destroyed, the entirety of the Level will reset completely, putting everything back in its place as if it is a time loop, and will remain paused up until another traveller's entrance, in which, the timer will begin counting and the events abruptly repeating themselves.

Anomalies

The chaos within the Level is amplified by the anomalies and events it contains, with there being three main anomalies/events that have been documented, which are as follows:

DRAFTS:
From time to time, an extraordinarily strong gale of wind can accumulate from any of the four directions. This will push anything and around, which may be useful for traversing if the wind is to blow you in the direction you are already moving, but could also drop you into the clutches of a dangerous Life-Form. These gales are short, but fairly frequent, happening around once every 10 minutes. This is believed to be some sort of convergence between the outside and inside briefly, as the wind power is akin to that of the outside.

UPSIDE-DOWN:
Every few minutes, the centre of gravity within Level 99 will suddenly flip upside down, causing the entirety of the Level to work upside down, and everything will be affected. Objects within the Level will fall to the ceiling, along with any Life-Forms and travellers in the Level at the time. There is no transition between the flip, so you will immediately fall up to the ceiling. You should always be ready for the flip, as the result of hitting the ceiling head-first could be severe, even fatal in some cases.

EARTHQUAKE:
As the name suggests, this event causes an extremely disorientating shake to affect the entirety of Level 99, knocking everything over, and lasting for a painfully long time for what it is, generally lasting around 3 minutes. For the duration of this event, the area surrounding you will creak to an anxiety-inducing level, but will never break or weaken, all it does is create fear in those experiencing it.

Accessibility Methods

Entrances

Approaching a tornado within Level 72's Zone 4 will cause you to unexplainably phase directly into Level 99.

In Levels close to Level 99, one can come across windows that will lead directly into the Level, after getting into the Level, the window used will disappear as soon as you break eye contact with it, alternatively, you can enter Level 99 through Level Level 97.

In Level 11, one can come across a run-down house akin to what can be seen on the outside of Level 99, entering it can lead you here.

Exits

Escaping Level 99 can be done by finding a specific door within the darkened halls that emanates a bright light from under it. Opening the door, and walking through will lead you to Level 100.
